Lauryn Hill’s 1998 Album of the Year-winning masterpiece captured the spotlight from the male-dominated hip-hop mainstream and introduced themes of female identity and sexuality. Hill’s solo debut drew from soul, R&B and reggae influences to showcase the depth of her voice and blaze a path forward for a generations of hip hop artists.
