This lecture by John Daniel Tilford, Curator of Collections at the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art, will focus on the rich artistic heritage of both the Gee's Bend community of quilters in Southern Alabama and late 19th/early 20th century potters of the old Edgefield District in South Carolina. Once dismissed as purely practical and utilitarian objects, the quilts and pottery created by these two communities are now heralded as great works of art. Placing such works in a historical context -- like in "Beloved Community" -- can help foster greater appreciation for quilt and pottery as more than just tools.
Admission is $10 at the door for non-members. Free with Petrel Pass.
