Pinto Sunshine thrives as a live band, flooding any stage with loads of energy and genre-bending sound. Devoted fans flock to hear Pinto Sunshine.
Following his departure from a previous metal project, lead singer and guitarist Santiago Cabeza (Santi) united old friends from School of Rock Atlanta, the all-ages music education program, to form this crew.
Their chemistry was apparent from the beginning, when Cabeza presented the song “Villains” as just a riff and some vocals to Noah Pappo, who also strums the guitar and sings, and to drummer Colton Clements. Together, they wrote the full track.
“When we all were in the same room, we just put the whole song together all at once,” Cabeza said. “I was like, ‘OK, this is the group I’ve been looking for.’”
A serendipitous moment with friends in the car is how he came up with the band’s name. A beam of sunlight shone through the window, illuminating the bean promo, “pinto,” on the side of a Chipotle takeout bag.
“For Spanish speakers, pinto conjugated means ‘I paint,’ so it’s like ‘I paint sunshine,’” Cabeza added. Clements jokingly reminded him that he didn’t find that out until after the Chipotle bag inspired the name.

While the band started releasing music in 2022, members don’t consider Pinto Sunshine’s true origin to be until 2024, when bassist Samuel (“Jam”) Mecum joined, helping the band come into its own.
The band is a creative outlet and first priority for its members (all are in other bands as well.) Pappo is in Letter Bomb, a Green Day tribute band, and Mecum plays guitar for the post-hardcore metal band Cascadent. Cabeza and Clements are members of Zoe Bayani, with Clements also in Yearn, a shoegaze band that just moved to California and tapped into the local jazz scene.
“With Pinto, we can be like, ‘Hey, what if we make this punky song, but then add a salsa section?’” Cabeza said. “It’s hard to make that work sometimes, but our whole thing is we can do it because we can do whatever we want.”
Members make a point of writing different types of music, ranging from stoner to punk to classic rock, with progressive, sun rock with a Latin flair as the most all-encompassing way they’ve found to describe their unique style.
The band’s lyrics pack emotion, imagery and the occasional metaphor into each verse, allowing listeners to interpret songs as they see fit, discovering new meaning every time they press play.
“I think Santi has a very unique approach to writing lyrics because he’s bilingual and a lot of our songs do feature Spanish lyrics,” Clements said. “But, even his English lyrics are sometimes phrased in ways you would never think, just because Santi might not know the English word… but I think it leads to some genuinely beautiful and profound stuff.”

Cabeza noted that when he writes and sings in Spanish, he’s using a different part of his brain and accessing another layer of his consciousness, where his Spanish lyrics tend to be a bit sadder in tone, and his English lyrics favor more grammatical creativity.
Pinto Sunshine will release a new concept album this year, visually inspired by the Mexican Bingo game, Lotería, which uses a deck of cards featuring retro cultural illustrations of simple icons.
“Our songs are very different genre-wise, so one thing that could help us turn [our singles] into one thing is if each song gets its own individual Lotería card design, so the listener would identify each song with each card, tying a visual to the track,” Cabeza said.
They love the marketability of this concept, since promoting singles is statistically more successful, but when you listen to the whole record together and have all the Lotería cards, you’re able to play the game of chance.
This creativity shines on stage. The band has performed at The Masquerade in downtown Atlanta and Smith’s Old Bar in Midtown, two of their favorite Atlanta venues. Members affectionately call Smith’s their second home.
