Atlanta’s Theater Scene Starts at the Alliance
The Tony Award-winning Alliance Theatre owns a legacy of premiering musicals that go on to become nominated for Tony Awards. “Maybe Happy Ending,” which premiered at the Alliance, won six Tonys at the 78th Tony Awards ceremony in 2025: Best New Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical, Best Leading Actor in a Musical and Best Scenic Design of a Musical. The theater itself won a Tony in 2007 for outstanding regional theater.
Reasons to Visit the Alliance Theatre
- It is the flagship theater of the Southeast.
- The Alliance routinely stages award-winning plays and musicals. Shows that have premiered at the Alliance Theatre and gone on to win Tony Awards are Alice Walker’s “The Color Purple,” Elton John’s “Aida” and Atlanta native Alfred Uhry’s “The Last Night of the Ballyhoo,” in addition to the 2025 Tony winner “Maybe Happy Ending.”
- Big names in music create shows for the Alliance. Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman’s play “Harmony: A New Musical ” made its debut when it opened the Alliance’s 2013 season.
- Atlanta natives make a splash at the Alliance. Atlanta native Alfred Urhy wrote “Driving Miss Daisy.” Atlanta native and Theater Hall of Fame member Dana Ivey originated the role off Broadway.
