Mayor Andre Dickens launched the ATL Year of the Youth to ensure Atlanta is the best place to raise a child. Through the initiative, Atlanta’s children, youth and young adults have access to the high-quality cultural and learning experiences available across the City. Check out The ATL Year of the Youth activities and events below to participate. The ATL Year of the Youth and partner programming are designed for children, youth and young adults. All are welcome to enjoy!
Youth Development and Education
A few of the Year of the Youth ambassadors visited some of Atlanta’s teen and tween attractions around the city using our Discover Atlanta app! One of the first stops was the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park.
For the next stop, the youth ambassadors headed outside to enjoy the art, and scenery at the Atlanta Beltline Eastside Trail.
The Year of the Youth ambassadors enjoyed the many exhibits at the Center For Puppetry Arts. They couldn’t leave without stopping for a picture at Big Bird’s nest.

How to Celebrate Juneteenth in Atlanta
Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, is celebrated on June 19 in the United States to commemorate the day Union Gen. Gordon Granger and Union soldiers told enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, that they were free. It was June 19, 1865, more than two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863.
In Atlanta and across the country, businesses and communities are honoring the cultural and historical importance of Juneteenth with educational events and programming, parades and holidays. It is the only holiday that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved Africans throughout the United States. As the heartbeat of the American civil rights movement and home of many civil rights activists including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Coretta Scott King and U.S. Rep. John Lewis, Atlanta is responding to the call to reflect Black history with the following events:
