FAQ: MICHELIN Guide 2026 Awards

What do one, two and three MICHELIN Stars mean?

MICHELIN Stars recognize outstanding cooking. One Star signals a restaurant worth stopping for. Two Stars recognize cooking worth taking a detour to experience. Three Stars, the highest rating, mean the food is worth planning a special journey around. Each level gives food lovers another reason to explore.

How does a restaurant earn a MICHELIN Star?

MICHELIN’s anonymous inspectors evaluate five things: ingredient quality, cooking technique, how flavors work together, the chef’s personality expressed through the food, and consistency across the menu and over time. Inspectors pay for their meals and make decisions together, drawing on multiple visits.

What is a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand?

A Bib Gourmand recognizes restaurants serving delicious food at a great value. It is a separate distinction from a MICHELIN Star, with affordability considered alongside cooking quality. For visitors exploring Atlanta’s food scene, Bib Gourmand restaurants are a great place to start when looking for a memorable meal at a moderate price.

What does MICHELIN Recommended mean?

MICHELIN Recommended restaurants earn a place in the Guide because inspectors recommend their cooking, even though they have not received a Star or Bib Gourmand. Inspectors evaluate them using the same food criteria as Starred restaurants. Being included is recognition worth celebrating, and another reason to add a restaurant to your Atlanta dining list.

Are MICHELIN Stars awarded to restaurants or chefs?

MICHELIN Stars belong to restaurants. They recognize the cooking that the kitchen delivers as a team. If a chef leaves, the Star does not automatically move with them or disappear. Inspectors assess whether the restaurant continues to meet the same standard.

Can a restaurant lose its MICHELIN Star?

Yes. MICHELIN Stars are awarded annually, and restaurants are reassessed to see whether they maintain their cooking standards. A restaurant can retain its rating, earn additional Stars or lose Stars. Previous recognition does not guarantee the same result the following year.

Can restaurants apply or pay for a MICHELIN Star?

Restaurants can request consideration for the Guide, but they cannot buy a Star. Inclusion is free, and the decision rests with MICHELIN’s inspectors. A request gives inspectors a restaurant to consider; it does not guarantee a listing or an award.

Does a restaurant have to offer fine dining to earn a MICHELIN Star?

No. Exceptional cooking can happen in a casual neighborhood spot or an elegant dining room. MICHELIN Stars are based on the food. Décor, formal service and luxurious surroundings don’t determine the rating, and a tasting menu is not required.

What are MICHELIN Special Awards?

MICHELIN Special Awards celebrate the people whose talents help make dining memorable. Categories can recognize emerging chefs, outstanding service and wine expertise. These honors are separate from restaurant Stars and Bib Gourmands, and spotlight hospitality professionals and their contributions.

What happened to the MICHELIN Green Star in 2026?

The Green Star recognized restaurants for their sustainability efforts. In 2026, MICHELIN announced that it would discontinue the distinction. Earlier Green Star honors remain part of a restaurant’s award history.
