Grant Park

Grant Park is the only neighborhood in Atlanta where you will find African elephants. Aside from housing Zoo Atlanta, Grant Park is known as being a hip hangout for foodies and history buffs. The neighborhood is home to Oakland Cemetery, the final resting place of Margaret Mitchell, Bobby Jones and many former Atlanta mayors.

Grant Park is one of those neighborhoods that just feels like home. Located close to Downtown Atlanta, just south of Oakland Cemetery and east of Turner Field, Grant Park is characterized by Victorian-style architecture, little villages of local shops and restaurants, and the fourth-largest park in the city. And did we mention it’s also home to Zoo Atlanta?

Visitors are welcome to engage with the neighborhood by relaxing in the park, bringing families to Zoo Atlanta  and on the northern-most tip of Grant Park, and exploring the 48 acres of historic Oakland Cemetery. Along Boulevard, Memorial and Cherokee avenues, you’ll discover many ways to experience the neighborhood’s local character and dining scene.

Trees are a signature feature of Grant Park, and whether you’re enjoying a cup of joe on a coffee shop’s patio or taking a bike ride down the street, a canopy of trees keeps your experience cool in the summer. Be sure to visit during the Grant Park Summer Shade Festival for even more quirky Atlanta fun.

As you walk, bike or drive through the neighborhood, you’ll notice that many of the homes display Grant Park signs. Residents are very proud to be part of this neighborhood and go out of their way to be friendly to guests.

Did you know…

• Zoo Atlanta began when a visiting circus went bankrupt while traveling through Atlanta? Local lumber merchant George Gress purchased animals from the circus and donated them to the city in 1889. The city decided Grant Park was the best location for the zoo and carved space out for the attraction.
• Most of Grant Park’s homes and buildings were built between the neighborhood’s founding in 1882 and the first decades of the 20th century.
• The second-oldest house in Atlanta is still standing on its original location: the 1858 mansion of Lemuel P. Grant, after whom the park and neighborhood are named. The Grant home now serves as the headquarters of the Atlanta Preservation Center.
• You can experience the Victorian architecture yourself during the annual Grant Park Tour of Homes. We love a chance to peek inside some of these beautiful homes.
• Oakland Cemetery (established 1850) is where “Gone With the Wind” author Margaret Mitchell, golfer Bobby Jones, 25 former mayors of Atlanta, six former governors of Georgia and many Civil War dead are buried. Take a tour and learn more about its rich history.
