Fun Facts About Chastain Park
- At 268 acres, Chastain Park is the city’s biggest green space, featuring golf, tennis, swimming, horseback riding, playgrounds, trails, and more.
- Opened in 1944, the Synovus Bank Amphitheater at Chastain Park is Atlanta’s oldest outdoor music venue, having hosted legends like Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon and Bob Dylan.
- Back in the 1930s, the park featured a sunken plaza nicknamed the “Witches’ Cave”—a horseshoe-shaped stone grotto complete with fireplaces and benches. It was buried in the 1970s, but you can still find remnants of its old chimneys and steps if you know where to look.
- The Chastain Park Golf Course, an 18-hole course rated Atlanta’s top public course, was laid out in 1937 with designs influenced by golfing greats like Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen, and H. Chandler Egan.
- Chastain Park is home to one of the last remaining urban equestrian centers in the U.S., the Chastain Horse Park.
- Chastain Park houses Northside Youth Organization (NYO), one of the country’s largest intra-league youth sports programs and The Chastain Arts Center and Gallery, the oldest Atlanta educational arts facility.

Dive in the Pool
The Chastain Park Athletic Club opens its pool during the summer and is free to the public on weekday mornings.
Play a Match
The Chastain Park Tennis Center offers lessons and league play for adults and kids, while the Northside Youth Organization hosts youth football, cheerleading, fast-pitch softball, baseball and basketball. Come play or watch a game.
Go for a Ride
The Chastain Horse Park offers riding lessons, a therapeutic riding program for people with disabilities and hosts the Horse Lovers Camp for kids in the summer.
Get Artistic
Take a class at The Chastain Arts Center and Gallery. Classes include mixed media book making, illustration and comics, picture framing, figure drawing and ceramics. There are even yoga classes that cater specifically to artists.
Go for a Walk or Run
Walk or run along a paved path. Several trails — two 5Ks and a 3K — are managed by the PATH Foundation. Each route takes you past the golf course, over Nancy Creek by bridge and around a fish-filled pond where you’re likely to spot wild ducks and geese.
Swing, Jump and Slide
Kids will have a blast at the Chastain Park Playground swinging on the giant “oodle”, racing downhill on bumpy slides and scrambling up a climbing wall. There’s even a music area where kids can play drums and chimes.

- Chastain Park offers multiple parking lots at the north end of the park and a small parking lot next to the playground. Additional street parking can be found along Chastain Park Avenue and Chastain Memorial Parkway.
- Bathrooms and water fountains can be found at the main structures and at the playground.
