The 2026 James Beard Awards may not have brought a trophy to Atlanta, but the city once again proved it belongs among America’s culinary elite.
Buckhead restaurant Aria was recognized as a finalist for Outstanding Hospitality, while chef J. Trent Harris of Mujō earned finalist honors for Best Chef: Southeast, placing both among the most celebrated restaurants and culinary professionals in the nation.
As Atlanta continues to gain recognition on the national stage, this year’s finalist designations reinforce the city’s growing influence as one of America’s most dynamic food destinations.

For Aria, the nomination marks a consecutive year as a finalist in the Outstanding Hospitality category, a distinction that recognizes excellence in service and guest experience.
“It’s still an incredible honor,” owner Andrés Loaiza said. “We know how many great restaurants and hospitality professionals there are across the country, so to be recognized by your peers means a great deal. More than anything, it feels like recognition for our entire team and for the Atlanta dining community that has supported us for more than 25 years.”
The recognition comes as Aria enters a new chapter under newly appointed executive chef Austin Goetzman. A former member of the restaurant’s culinary team, Goetzman returns after gaining experience in renowned kitchens including The French Laundry, EL Ideas, Acadia and Atlanta’s MICHELIN-starred Lazy Betty.

Meanwhile, Harris’ finalist recognition continues a remarkable run for Mujo and further highlights Atlanta’s emergence as a destination for world-class Japanese cuisine. In addition to leading Mujō, Harris now serves as executive chef, overseeing Koshu Club.

“I’m excited for our team. The nomination means that all the hard work MUJŌ’s team has put in over the past few years is being recognized,” said Harris. “Everyone has sacrificed a lot to make the restaurant successful and be the best it can be.”

Atlanta’s representation extended beyond. Meherwan and Molly Irani of Chai Pani Restaurant Group were finalists for Best Restaurateur, in recognition of the leadership behind a restaurant group that includes Atlanta favorites Chai Pani and Botiwalla. Their nomination further showcased the breadth of Atlanta’s culinary talent, highlighting not only standout chefs and hospitality teams, but also the restaurateurs helping shape the city’s dining culture.

While neither finalist took home an award, their recognition reflects a broader story about Atlanta’s culinary evolution. The city’s chefs and restaurants continue to earn accolades from organizations including the James Beard Foundation and MICHELIN Guide, helping establish Atlanta as a destination worthy of national and international attention.
Atlanta’s continued presence among the James Beard Awards finalists serves as another signal that the city’s dining scene is no longer emerging—it has arrived.
