Hidden Bars and Speakeasies in Atlanta You Should Know

Hidden behind unknown doors and nestled between dark alleyways, you’d never expect to find some of Atlanta’s best dining experiences. One of my favorite things about dining in Atlanta is the moments that take you beyond the obvious. I can enjoy my favorite espresso martini behind a door disguised as a bookshelf in a cafe or indulge in astrology-based cocktails in a vibey bar tucked in a dark alleyway. There’s never a dull moment. Up for an adventure? Pick your journey and follow along. 

Beyond the obvious

Hidden inside or around some popular spots in Atlanta, you’ll have to go off the beaten path to catch these vibes. 

La Cueva

Hidden behind a barbershop on the second floor of Ponce City Market, you would never expect you’d be dining inside of a cave. As soon as you walk in, you follow the red lights down the cave entrance, and you’re transported into a Latin-inspired getaway. Open late nights with live music often gracing the intimate stage. It’s the perfect backdrop for a date night. If you’re into fresh fish, you must try the Peruvian ceviche. The Thrilla in Manila cocktail was the perfect pair.

The James Room

It was hard not to become a regular at this Eastside Beltline favorite when I first moved here in 2021. I felt like I truly uncovered a secret along the busy trail, walking beyond the bookshelf-disguised door and stepping into a sexy lounge with dim lighting and a playlist hard not to bop to. The same energy still carries today with pop-up events. Check it out on a Tuesday for live music or enjoy half-priced wine on Wine Wednesdays. The crab cake is a must, and you can’t go wrong with their classic wings.

Ranger Station

This is my favorite spot to hit during the holiday season. I’m instantly transported to a rustic ski lodge somewhere in the mountains. The same cozy vibes are kept year-round with vintage decor and couch seating perfect for a gals or guys night where you’ll definitely want to stay a while.

May Peel

You can discover this secluded bar in the center of Hotel Granada. The team takes an artful approach to their cocktail program, with favorites like the Mrs. Lily. What makes this spot unique beyond its hidden location and sultry vibe is its inspiration from the legacy of the Titanic Survivor and Author Lily May Futrelle, who was also a tenant of the Grenada Apartments.

A true hidden gem is a spot that you might miss if you don’t hear about it through the grapevine. There’s always something unexpected beyond these hidden doors.

After Eight

After enjoying a delicious spread of sushi from Eight Sushi Lounge, I always like to cap my meal off by heading behind the hidden grey door and into the intimate cocktail lounge. The service is great, and as a frequent solo diner, I always feel like I’m in good company with the staff and bartenders looking out for me. Not sure what you’re in the mood for? Just tell them your vibe or flavor palette, and they’ll shake up something great. The complimentary selection of Asian snacks they set my table with is always the cherry on top.

Redacted Basement Drink Parlor

If I had to describe this spot in one word, I’d simply say “cool”. Turning off one of the main streets of Atlanta’s most charming neighborhood, Summerhill, you’ll walk past bold graffiti art and find yourself at the door to this underground speakeasy. I enjoyed a solo date here and chatted with the bartender as he shook up one of my new favorite cocktails, F’N Froot Loop. You’ll find a lot of the ingredients redacted from the menu, hence the name.

Bar Ana

Romanticize your late-night sweet treat at this dessert and cocktail bar. From the playlist curating the perfect vibes to a menu of pastries led by Claudia Martinez, you can’t go wrong with a stop at this hidden gem. You’ll find the entrance hidden in the back lot of El Ponce; you might mistake it for an employee-only entrance, but as long as you see the Bar Ana text on the door, you’re in the right place. While it’s open for desserts and cocktails in the evening, you can enjoy coffee from a cafe pop-up, Recuerdos, open Thursday through Monday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

JoJo’s Beloved

“I just want to dance” are words I often say after a good dinner with the girls. It’s hard to find a lively spot to keep those good vibes going, and JoJo’s Beloved always delivers. In the back corner of the Politan Row at Colony Square Food Hall, it’s a place where you can truly expect to dance with no care of what others think. You might bump shoulders on the dance floor with strangers who become friends or dance partners for the night. As an espresso martini snob, I can confidently say they have one of the best, but if that’s not your thing, the cocktail list is creative and easy to find a new favorite.

Barrel Proof

West Midtown needed a gem like this. After a night of hopping around some of the go-to bars in the Interlock, you find yourself in the mood for a nightcap to end a good night. It’s open late with affordable prices and drinks that match the insta-worthy vibe. Choose from over 300 whiskeys or a menu of classics and gourmet bar bites. Check out their ‘Happier Hour’ Monday through Friday, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., for $8 martinis or $5 frozen margaritas. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the espresso martini for the price. I’ll definitely be back for $3 Three-dip fries.

Close Company

I was stunned to walk past this hit casually. With dim lighting, R&B and pop blasting, I was immediately drawn in. I consider Close Company to be the cherry on top of all the new buzz of developments along the Eastside Beltline. It’s set back from all the action, and you might not recognize it unless you’re curious enough to walk beyond the staircase that leads you up to the trail. It has a retro-yet-modern vibe with fun cubbies where you grab your food. I obsessed over the classic hot dog, which went perfectly with the super martini.

7th House

Combine astrology, cocktails and maybe an oyster or two, and what do you get? An eccentric dining experience you’ll find hard to leave. Hidden in the center of what looks like a warehouse building, as soon as you enter, you’ll feel like you’re dining under the stars. Visit for power hour and enjoy $1.80 oysters from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The Caesar Salad is a perfect bite to go with the fun selection of Zodiac-themed cocktails.

Catch it if you can

These bars are exclusive. Whether you need a special code to get in or it’s all in who you know, it definitely takes effort, but once you’re in, it’s worth the journey. 

The Red Phonebooth

Finding the telephone booth on a side street in Downtown is the first adventure, and getting in is the next. Of all the speakeasies I’ve been to in Atlanta, The Red Phonebooth truly feels like I’ve time-traveled back to the 1920s Prohibition era. Dark lighting, vintage interiors, and cozy couches await on the other side of the secret door. Peruse the award-winning cocktail book and watch the bartenders show off their skills, from chopping large ice cubes and lighting fire for smoky bourbon drinks – I was mesmerized watching them craft each drink. The Floradora has become one of my go-tos for a sweet sip topped with an edible flower.

Himitsu

After enjoying a meal from one of Atlanta’s favorite sushi spots, Umi, you might be lucky enough to be “referred” to visit their private speakeasy, Himitsu. The door is hard to find, and members get their retina scanned to get access granted- yes, completely James Bond style. Continue your dining experience with more Japanese small plates, desserts and a unique cocktail menu. It’s not just the glamour and lush decor that make you feel special here; it’s getting in.

The Club at Chops

What started as a private space for the Restaurant Group founder and his friends to dine and smoke cigars turned into a members-only networking hub. Guests can enjoy a menu of classic Chops favorites with live music playing five nights a week. Getting into this exclusive hot spot is the hard part. Knowing someone who’s already a member may be easiest since the membership waitlist has its own waitlist.

Lions Head

Founded by restaurateur and owner of Yebo Beach Haus, Justin Anthony, Lion Head brings luxury and privacy into this member-only space. At entry, the staff will place a sticker over your phone camera with a strict no-photography rule. Those lucky enough to get access can expect an experience with many references to the owner’s ties to Cape Town, with a South African wine collection that is hard to get elsewhere.

The Bureau

While it is not so much of a secret anymore, this Speakeasy is still a mystery to find. To enter, you’ll be escorted through the open-face kitchen into a space with moody lighting and an old-fashioned vibe. What makes it different? No membership necessary, if you know you know.

FORTH Club

While FORTH Hotel has many trendy places to wine and dine open to the public, its exclusive membership club gives you access to private dining with an entrance that many might miss. Members enjoy live music, events, special dining services, and health and wellness classes. Consider this your one-stop shop.
