Sports Meets Meetings: How Atlanta Hosts Sports Events at Every Scale

Atlanta United Soccer at Mercedes-Benz Stadium

Atlanta has hosted the world and showcased how powerful a sports destination it can be for teams and groups of any size, format or level. And on February 13, 2028, Super Bowl LXII returns to Mercedes-Benz Stadium, marking our city’s fourth time hosting the game and its second at the stadium.

This summer, FIFA World Cup 26 brought eight matches, including a semifinal, to Mercedes-Benz Stadium and drew more than 500,000 visitors to fan festivities across 40 days of citywide operations. International guests went home talking about the city’s transit connections, walkable Downtown entertainment districts and signature Southern hospitality.

A true sports city earns that title in the other weeks of the year: the college kickoffs, the conference championships, the club volleyball brackets and the youth soccer showcases that fill fields, gyms and hotel blocks across metro Atlanta. This city hosts those, too, with the same coordinated hospitality network that just performed on the world’s biggest stage.

Why Host a Sports Event in Atlanta?

Truist Park at The Battery Atlanta

Atlanta’s sports ecosystem runs on multiple tracks.

There’s the global stage, where Mercedes-Benz Stadium and a citywide civic partnership have now delivered a World Cup summer on top of an Olympic legacy.

Downtown Atlanta concentrates its heavy hitters on a single connected campus: Mercedes-Benz Stadium, State Farm Arena, Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC) and Centennial Olympic Park sit within a compact, walkable footprint, surrounded by a large hotel package.

Beyond Downtown, Truist Park at The Battery Atlanta pairs Braves baseball with a built-in entertainment district, and Gateway Center Arena at College Park gives basketball, volleyball and mid-size events a modern home minutes from the airport. That range opens up real programming options: statewide championships, competition spaces at GWCC exhibit halls for cheer, dance, wrestling, volleyball or esports, and opening or awards ceremonies with real pomp and circumstance in the convention center’s meeting rooms and ballroom.

In addition, our city is home to a professional and college sports calendar for the Falcons, Braves, Hawks, Atlanta United and the WNBA’s Dream, plus annual college football traditions like the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl and SEC Championship that keep venue operations and event staff sharp year-round.

Atlanta also brings something every event owner wants: people who care enough to show up. From college rivalries at Georgia Tech, Georgia State and Atlanta’s historically Black colleges and universities to pro volleyball, roller derby and the city’s growing women’s sports landscape, sports are part of the local rhythm. And that passion creates a stronger atmosphere for competitors and a more compelling experience for spectators.

There’s the community and youth sports event scene: parks, recreation centers and metro-area complexes where youth and amateur sports live week in and week out.

Here’s what you can build in Atlanta:

Proof at a Global Scale

FIFA Fan Festival for FIFA World Cup 26™

If you’re evaluating future host cities, the World Cup was a live, public stress test, and Atlanta passed it in front of a global audience. The tournament required large-scale transportation planning, multilingual hospitality, venue security and safety coordination and public activations running simultaneously, from FIFA Fan Fest at Centennial Olympic Park to watch parties that drew thousands to Piedmont Park.

Hotels, restaurants and Downtown venues absorbed record surges during match windows while the city kept moving.

That is the operational scale a destination simply can’t fake. It’s the same muscle Atlanta puts behind a 500-person youth tournament or a conference championship.

The Marquee Ahead: Super Bowl LXII and Beyond

Beyond Super Bowl LXII, Atlanta’s sports calendar stays active year-round. The NCAA Men’s Final Four arrives in 2031, while college football’s postseason returns annually with the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl and SEC Championship. The pro sports calendar also keeps State Farm Arena and Gateway Center Arena at College Park active with Hawks and Dream basketball.

If you’re planning a sports event or meeting, Atlanta gives you an infrastructure, volunteer base, public safety network and hospitality workforce practiced at major-event operations year-round.

Youth Sports: Hosting the Next Generation

Best of South at Georgia World Congress Center

Youth and amateur sports travel decisions are made by tournament directors, coaches and, more than anyone, parents. In a competitive event landscape, the priorities are consistent: a standout participant experience, clear value for families, safety at every level and a destination with plenty to do between games.

Greater Atlanta answers each one. Our area is home to major youth sports infrastructure and City of Atlanta parks, athletic fields and recreation centers like Chastain Memorial Park that keep community leagues and local tournaments running year-round.

Between sessions, families can walk from Downtown hotels to the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola and Centennial Olympic Park, or explore the Beltline’s trails, public art and restaurants.

You can give coaches quality facilities and efficient schedules without long drives between venues, while families get walkable dining, easy transit and a full weekend of things to do beyond the bracket. Hotel inventory spans every price point, and a destination this appealing tends to boost tournament registration numbers on its own, giving organizers a head start on the planning.

Getting Everyone to the Game

Access is where Atlanta separates itself for regional and national draws alike. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the most-traveled airport in the world, offers direct, nonstop service to more than 150 U.S. cities and 75 international destinations, and puts 80 percent of the U.S. market within a two-hour flight or two-day drive.

MARTA rail runs directly from the airport into Downtown and delivers attendees to the heart of Atlanta’s sports and convention campus. The SEC District station places fans steps from Mercedes-Benz Stadium, State Farm Arena, Georgia World Congress Center and Centennial Olympic Park. At $2.50 per ride, MARTA gives your attendees a simple, affordable route to the game and makes your event more accessible to a broader audience.
