Quick Facts About ATL

Understanding the Layout

ATL has two main terminals.

Domestic Terminal

Divided into the North and South sides. The South side primarily serves Delta Air Lines, while the North side serves other domestic carriers.

International Terminal

Also known as the Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal, this is where most international departures and arrivals take place.

After security, all concourses are connected by the Plane Train and a pedestrian tunnel with moving walkways and art installations. If you have time, walking between concourses can be faster than waiting for the train and offers a chance to stretch your legs.

Tips for Your First Flight Out of Atlanta

Flying out of ATL for the first time? Here is how to make it feel easy.

Arrive Earlier Than You Think

For domestic flights, plan to arrive at least two hours before departure. For international flights, aim for three hours. Traffic around the airport builds quickly, especially during peak morning and evening travel windows.

Check Your Terminal Before You Leave

Confirm whether you are departing out of the Domestic Terminal or the International Terminal. Rideshare drop offs, parking access and security checkpoints differ between the two.

Download the Airline App

Gate changes happen. Download your airline’s app and enable notifications so you stay ahead of updates.

Use the Plane Train Strategically

The Plane Train runs continuously and connects every concourse in minutes. If your connection is tight, stand near the doors and move quickly once they open. If you have extra time, consider walking to enjoy the art installations in the underground tunnel.

TSA PreCheck and CLEAR Save Time

ATL participates in TSA PreCheck and CLEAR. Frequent travelers appreciate shorter lines and faster screening.

Dining at ATL is worth arriving early and goes well beyond typical airport fare. Across the concourses, you’ll find local Atlanta favorites, chef-driven concepts and quick grab-and-go options that make it easy to match your meal to your schedule. Southern comfort plates, fresh sushi, craft cocktails and strong coffee are all within reach of your gate.

Award-winning restaurants help set ATL apart. One Flew South in Concourse E has earned national recognition for its refined sushi and elevated Southern dishes, proving that airport dining can rival restaurants in the city. You’ll also spot beloved Atlanta names like Paschal’s for classic comfort food, Chicken + Beer for bold flavors and Ecco in the International Terminal for a polished sit-down experience.

Concourse E and F lean into international cuisine, while domestic concourses balance full-service dining with efficient counter options. If time allows, building in a proper meal can transform your travel day from rushed to relaxed.

Shopping at ATL

Need a last-minute gift, travel essentials or something stylish for the flight?

At Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, shopping goes far beyond a quick newsstand stop. Across the concourses, you’ll find a thoughtful mix of national favorites and Atlanta-rooted retailers. Pick up sleek luggage or a polished carry-on upgrade at Tumi, grab tech accessories and noise-canceling headphones at InMotion Entertainment or Brookstone, or browse beauty counters like MAC and Kiehl’s for in-flight refresh essentials.

Looking for something distinctly local? Newsstands and specialty shops carry Atlanta-themed gifts, Southern-made snacks and souvenirs that feel more curated than cliche. International travelers can explore Duty Free Americas in Concourses E and F for fragrance, spirits and luxury finds, while fashion-forward travelers can stop into Michael Kors or browse accessories at Patricia Nash and Brighton.

Whether you forgot a charger, need a thoughtful hostess gift or simply want to board with a new pair of sunglasses and a great book, ATL makes it easy to turn wait time into worthwhile browsing.

Parking and Transportation

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport offers multiple parking options, including hourly, daily and economy lots. The ATL West Parking Deck often provides a smoother entry experience during peak travel periods.

Rideshare services, taxis and hotel shuttles operate at designated pickup areas outside each terminal. If you are being dropped off, allow a time buffer since curbside traffic moves quickly and security lines fluctuate throughout the day.

Getting to and from ATL on MARTA

One of the easiest ways to reach Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is by MARTA, Atlanta’s public transit system.

The MARTA Airport Station sits directly inside the Domestic Terminal on the west end, creating a seamless option for travelers without a car. Trains run regularly throughout the day and connect the airport to Downtown, Midtown, Buckhead and surrounding neighborhoods.

If you are staying near Peachtree Center, Five Points or Midtown Station, the ride is straightforward and avoids highway traffic. For international departures, take MARTA to the Airport Station, then use the free airport shuttle that connects the Domestic Terminal to the International Terminal.

A Breeze Card or contactless payment provides quick access through the fare gates. During peak commute hours, allow a little extra time and keep luggage close in busy cars.

For visitors staying near a MARTA station, this can be one of the most stress-free ways to start or end a trip.

Navigating Connections at ATL

Connecting through ATL? You are in good company.

The airport was designed with connections in mind. All concourses are arranged in a straight line, making navigation intuitive. Most connections take less than 20 minutes once you are past security.

If your layover is longer, consider grabbing a sit-down meal, exploring the art installations in the underground walkway, relaxing in an airline lounge or walking the full length of the concourses for a quick movement break.

Art Installations Worth Exploring at the Airport

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is more than a place to catch a flight. It’s also home to one of the largest public art collections in the region. ATL Airport Art is a dedicated art program featuring permanent installations and rotating exhibits throughout the terminals, giving travelers a chance to experience Atlanta’s creative side before ever leaving the building.

One of the most well-known pieces is Flight Paths, a 450-foot immersive installation between Concourses A and B that feels like walking through a forest canopy, complete with lighting and sound designed to create a calming pause between gates. Another standout, airFIELD, shifts and changes based on real-time flight activity, turning arrivals and departures into moving art.

Fun fact: because so many people pass through ATL each day, some artworks are viewed by more visitors in a week than many museum exhibits see in months. Taking a moment to look around can turn a routine airport moment into a surprisingly memorable part of the trip.
