Every year from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, the United States celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month, honoring the histories, cultures and contributions of people with roots in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
The celebration begins on Sept. 15 because that date marks the independence days of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico and Chile.
In Atlanta, families can enjoy a month filled with music, food, art, sports and hands-on activities that showcase the richness and diversity of Hispanic and Latino communities. Here are some ideas:
Hands-On Learning at the Children’s Museum of Atlanta

From Sept. 2–30, the Children’s Museum of Atlanta offers interactive experiences for kids to explore Latin American heritage. Discover Olympic rower Kenia Vanessa Lechuga Alanís through a rowing expedition, learn about birds with the all-women 2020 Kerr expedition team, enjoy a story time of “A New Kind of Wild” and create Frida Kahlo-inspired animal self-portraits.
Festivals and Community Celebrations
On Sept. 13, head to Historic Old Fourth Ward Park for the free Estamos Aqui Festival, hosted by Latino Community Fund Georgia. Celebrate Latinidad with music, dance, shopping from Latin vendors, art activities and local organizations showcasing Hispanic culture.

Art Exhibitions to Explore
Atlanta offers several opportunities to admire Latinx and Hispanic art:
- Nuestra Creación Exhibition at Echo Contemporary (Sept. 5–28) highlights BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) artists with a focus on Latino voices. Learn more about how these art exhibits came about.

Sports with a Cultural Twist

Families can cheer on local teams while celebrating Latin heritage:

- Los Bravos Night at Truist Park on Sept. 23 honors Hispanic and Latino players with music, on-field presentations and cultural programming.
Dance, Music and Evening Celebrations
