Community Service Projects

Atlanta is proud to offer these unique community service opportunities to ASAE attendees in historic Vine City and Rodney J. Cook Peace Park – the community that has served as home base for the families of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Maynard Jackson, Julian Bond and other civil rights icons. This community also happens to be the closest to Georgia World Congress Center’s campus. Please join us to help create two special areas in Cook Park to be enjoyed by the residents of this neighborhood well into the future:

Enhance Cook Park’s Playground!

Rodney Cook Park

Volunteers will have the chance to refresh and install new plantings inspired by the original landscaping team (Trust for Public Land)  who designed Cook Park near the “Big Oak”. We’ll be working around the Park’s colorful playground to beautify a few spots.  There is still time to register for this innovative ASAE legacy project in historic Vine City as Rodney Cook Sr Park celebrates its second birthday this summer!  Join other ASAE colleagues to hear the story and history of Cook Park – AND the significant community that served as home base for the families of civil rights icons Dr. Martin Luther King, jr., Maynard Jackson and Julian Bond.  The GWCC campus is its closest neighbor as well.

Dress comfortably and we’ll have everything ready for you!

Where: Corner of Joseph E Boone Boulevard and Elm Street

When: Aug. 5 from 1 until 4 p.m.

Art in the Park

Atlanta muralist, Ashley Dobson

Paint the spaces in the design created by Atlanta muralist Ashley Dobson to showcase  “kids smiling and having fun” in the water at summertime. Our ASAE volunteers will be filling in the background as they would a paint- by -number project and all will be super easy and great fun!  No need to bring your brushes, favorite paints, tools or smocks.  You’ll be tapping into your creative side at Cook Park’s refreshing Splash Pad as your ASAE colleagues garden nearby. Learn the story and history of Cook Park – AND the significant community that has served as home base for the families of civil rights icons and you’ll see Atlanta’s downtown skyline and the GWCC campus just ahead!

Where: Corner of Joseph E Boone Boulevard and Elm Street

When: Aug. 5 from 1 until 4 p.m.
