Each year, Atlanta sets the bar high for its captivating music scene. Specifically, Black music takes the stage at venues across the city, sharing culture, history and pure talent with visitors and locals. Whether you are new to the music scene, or a long-time lover of rhymes and rhythm, you can find a spot that plays tunes catered to you. 

Monday

Poetry on Peter

Clear your evening for live music and poetry by some of Atlanta’s most talented up-and-coming artists. Poetry on Peter curates artistry and sound with a live band setting the mood for each spoken word artist and musician. Groove to your favorite tunes in between showstopping sets.

Tuesday

The James Room

Enjoy a stroll along the Atlanta Beltline before heading to The James Room for live music night, where Black musicians, like the band 6 Flow, often perform. Enjoy a speakeasy experience by entering through the hidden bookshelf doors, revealing an intimate lounge atmosphere. Enjoy a menu of elevated bites and charcuterie to go with seasonal cocktails. 

Wednesday

Tesserae at The Tess, Autograph Collection

On Wednesdays, visit Tesserae, the rooftop bar and restaurant above The Tess Hotel for an evening of live jazz. You’ll often find Black musicians and instrumentalists taking the mic, creating a perfect setting for skyline views of Buckhead.

Block & Drum

Venture a few miles outside of Downtown and stop by Block & Drum, which hosts an exciting lineup of live music, DJ sets and listening parties that celebrate the work of notable Black musicians. Guests can expect an eccentric blend of food and beverages to pair with an evening of music and live performances. Check the website and social media for special events and the schedule.

Thursday

St. James Live

Stop by St. James Live in the Camp Creek area for an upscale night of live music shows and a food menu of Southern favorites. The low-lit venue exudes an intimate vibe that is perfect for enjoying the live jazz and blues performances. Check out the website to view upcoming shows and purchase tickets.

Kat’s Cafe

Head to Midtown and visit Kat’s Cafe for Open Mic Night either to perform or support the many Black musicians and artists who take the stage. Home of one of the hottest jam sessions, Kat’s invites music lovers to enjoy signature martinis while singing along when local musicians take the stage.

Friday

High Museum of Art

Every first Friday, you can dance the night away at the High Museum of Art for HIGH Frequency Friday. A DJ takes the center of the floor, boasting hip-hop, R&B and house music as you browse the galleries and show off your moves. Go back for Jazz Friday every second Friday and enjoy a more sophisticated vibe with two live bands playing throughout the museum.

Saturday

Apache XLR

Enjoy a night Downtown and visit Apache XLR, one Atlanta’s top venues for live music and jam sessions. Apache is known for celebrating and uplifting Black culture and music, and you are sure to discover new favorites while enjoying food, cocktails and hookah.

Sunday

Ebenezer Baptist Church

Lift your spirits at Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Start with worship in the morning and fill up on brunch and beverages in the afternoon. Atlanta is home to many well-known Black churches, including Martin Luther King Jr.’s former church, Ebenezer Baptist Church where Georgia Senator, Reverend Raphael Warnock, is currently senior pastor. Enjoy the soulful sounds of the church choir to start your morning.

City Winery Atlanta

Head over to the Eastside and check out a show at City Winery. Black musicians, including well-known performers, often play on the weekends.
