Springtime Sports in Atlanta

From baseball to soccer, Atlanta’s sports lineup has plenty of exciting action that’s sure to keep you on the edge of your seat from March through May. Here are some of the must-see happenings.

Atlanta Braves

Fans of the longest continuously operating franchise in Major League Baseball can expect to find abundant action this season, as the team hosts its home opener versus the Philadelphia Phillies at Truist Park April 9. Be on the lookout for new players, including veteran starting pitchers Charlie Morton and Drew Smyly. Special promotions include giveaways featuring a Braves cap May 7; Bobblehead recognizing 2020 National League MVP Freddie Freeman May 23; and two-part Ozzie Albies and Ronald Acuña Jr. “Braves Win” set June 2 and 16.

Truist Park is part of The Battery Atlanta, an outdoor, mixed-use complex that surrounds the park. Dine or gather takeout at restaurants such as Terrapin Taproom and Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q (try the smoked wings), El Super Pan, C. Ellet’s and Superica.

Atlanta United FC

The city’s Major League Soccer team gets things rolling in April at Mercedes-Benz Stadium with new head coach Gabriel Heinze, a former Argentine international player and one of the top coaches coming out of South America. The team returns a talented roster featuring Josef Martinez, Ezequiel Barco, Miles Robinson and Brad Guzan. Of special note: Atlanta United qualified for the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League for the third consecutive year, with the region’s top international club competition taking place April 6-8.

It’s the new fan wear! Thanks to Piedmont Healthcare partners, branded face coverings will be distributed to all guests in attendance for Atlanta United matches. Mercedes-Benz Stadium has a cashless policy and accepts only credit or debit cards for transactions.

Atlanta Hawks

The second half of the team’s 2020-2021 schedule had not yet been released at press time, but some of the upcoming home opponents scheduled for this season at State Farm Arena include Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors, the defending Eastern Conference Champion Miami Heat, two-time defending MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks, and Zion Williamson and the New Orleans Pelicans.

State Farm Arena is the first sports and entertainment venue in the country to successfully become Sharecare Health Security Verified. Only credit or debit cards are accepted for payment and masks are required.

Rugby ATL

The Southeast’s only professional rugby team is taking Atlanta by storm. The RATLERS have three April games scheduled for Rugby ATL Stadium at Life University’s Lupo Family Field in Marietta. Opponents for the April games are San Diego Legion, Rugby United New York and NOLA Gold.

The Rugby ATL team is made up of team members from around the world. Pathway 404 is a program within RATLER Nation that provides regional coaches and players the opportunity to accelerate their first step on the pitch and gives resources for individual development.
